About the museum
The Imatran taidemuseo opened in 1951 at Vuoksenniska, on the top floor of the elementary school, and its founder is considered to be Jalo Sihtola. Today the museum operates in Mansikkala in the Kulttuuritalo Virta, the Imatra cultural centre designed by architect Arto Sipinen, which was completed in 1986.
The museum's collection includes more than 1,700 works, owned by the City of Imatra and the Imatran taideyhdistys (Imatra Art Association). A nationally significant part of the collection is the Sihtolan Imatra-kokoelma (Sihtola Imatra Collection), with just under 400 works of 20th-century modernist art. The collection also includes a large group of works by Tuomas von Boehm from the 1950s.
The museum has changing exhibitions presenting both works from the collection and contemporary art. The museum holds summer guided tours and workshops for schoolchildren, and it takes part in the Taidetestaajat (Art Testers) programme as a visiting site.
