About the museum
The collection of the Finnish Border Guard's tradition and history began in the 1960s, and a basic decision to create a teaching exhibition on border guard activities was made in Immola in the 1980s. The Rajamuseo began operating in 1989 as a teaching museum for the institution's own staff. The museum's appeal was soon noticed, and since the early 1990s outside visitors have also been able to visit it in summer.
The museum presents in particular the history of land-border surveillance, air and rescue operations, and the history of the border troops during the wars. It is located in Immola's historic barracks area, very close to Finland's eastern border. In the 1930s an air force base was built in the area, whose functionalist buildings have survived. Today Immola is home to, among others, the Raja- ja merivartiokoulu (Border and Coast Guard Academy), to which the museum belongs administratively.
The museum's new basic exhibition, Suomen suojelijat – Rajavartiolaitos rajaturvallisuuden ytimessä ennen ja nyt (Protectors of Finland – the Border Guard at the core of border security, past and present), opened in 2024 in the renovated former headquarters building from the 1930s. It tells the story of border security over more than a hundred years.
