About the museum
Haminan kaupunginmuseo (Hamina City Museum) tells the story of the town from the Stone Age to the present day. The museum operates in a building completed around 1760 in the old centre of Hamina, close to the town hall. The city museum moved into the house in 1957. In this house the Russian Empress Katariina II and the Swedish King Kustaa III negotiated in 1783; in 2023 the 240th anniversary of the meeting was celebrated, and the room depicting the negotiations was completely renewed.
The museum’s permanent exhibition Aikakausia ja aikalaisia (Eras and Contemporaries) presents the town’s stages of development, from the earliest settlement to the 20th century. The collection sheds light on, among other things, seafaring and the town’s schools, and the exhibition also presents famous people of Hamina origin. In the room depicting the negotiations, visitors can listen to music of the period and try on royal costumes.
The museum’s attic is an atmospheric space for workshops and events, and it is also rented as a meeting room. On the ground floor there is a reference library, which customers can use during opening hours, and the museum shop has a wide range of local products.
