About the museum
The Vehkalahti Village Museum is located in the village of Husula, in Vehkalahti's first elementary school building, which was completed in 1871. The building has housed a museum since 1960. The museum is run by the Hamina city museums.
The exhibition Reittien risteyksessä (At the Crossroads of Routes) leads visitors to the sea, the land and the forest, and presents village life around Hamina from the 1870s to the 1950s. In the old school there are things to touch and look at, from folk costumes that can be tried on to a coffee mill. In the functional classroom visitors can sit at the old desks of Pyhällö school or on the teacher's platform, and try counting on a bead frame, for example.
In summer the courtyard of the old school has garden toys such as a sandpit, hula hoops and stilts, and in the smithy a blacksmith from the Haminan Keskiaikaiset (Hamina Medieval group) sometimes hammers away. In the museum grounds visitors can walk the Tarinoiden Vehkalahti (Stories of Vehkalahti) checkpoint trail, and Finnsheep graze in the pasture. The village museum holds events and, in summer, art exhibitions.
