About the museum
The Kauppiaantalomuseo is a culturally significant log building completed in 1841 in the old centre of Hamina, on Kasarminkatu. The last of the outbuildings in the courtyard were built in the 1870s. Craftsmen of various trades lived and worked in the house and courtyard, and the last merchant family to keep a shop in the house was the Muravjev family.
The house was opened as a museum in the late 1970s. The museum presents the Finnish-Russian merchant tradition of the early 20th century with its old shops, as well as the everyday life of a craftsman with the living quarters and outbuildings in the courtyard. Some of the outbuildings are open to the public in summer, and in summer the enclosed old-time courtyard is also opened.
The museum’s interior is decorated for Christmas and Easter with objects suited to the season and with texts written in the form of stories. Imaginary stories depict the lives of the house’s residents in bygone times.

The museum is partly inaccessible. The main entrance is two steps up, with no handrail, and the hallway has a few steps with a handrail. An entrance with a barrier-free ramp is on the courtyard side, and staff can open the gate to the yard on request. The indoor passageways are narrow, and there are thresholds between rooms. The courtyard is paved with cobblestones, and the entrances to the outbuildings are at the top of flights of steps.
