About the museum
The Haveri mine in Viljakkala was opened in the 18th century to extract iron ore. The ore was carried by horse to Tampere for processing, but the operation was not initially profitable. The mine was close to closing until gold was found in the ore. Thanks to the gold, operations revived, and the medals for the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games were made from Haveri gold. In 1953 the mine produced around 400 kilograms of gold.
Gold mining ended in 1960 as unprofitable. The mine site filled with water, and the water-filled open pit is a well-known dive site, where only professional divers dive. The mine tower and a large rocky open pit remain visible on the site.
The mine museum is looked after by the City of Ylöjärvi as part of its cultural services. In summer, guided tours are held on the mine site, introducing the history of the mine and the mining community.
