About the museum
The museum operates in a parish storehouse built in 1855, which according to local tradition was built on a former sacrificial rock. In the Catholic era, Uotinpäivät were held on the site after the Mass of St Olaf on 29 July. The museum is run by Sysmä Seura (founded in 1962 as the Sysmän Kotiseutuyhdistys).
The collections contain objects from prehistory onwards, but the majority represent folk culture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The glass display cases hold glass and porcelain objects, such as the Sysmä coffee cup and a bottle from the Viiruniemi glassworks. The objects in the handling collection may be touched. In the yard stands a prehistoric house (muinaistalo) built in 2010.
