About the museum

The Joutsa House Museum is located on Koiravuori farm, about two kilometres north of the Joutsa church village. The area is an old farmyard where people still lived in the late 19th century. Construction of the museum area began in 1964, and buildings have been moved there from elsewhere to its yard of about one and a half hectares; the windmill stands outside the actual farmyard.

The museum's main building is the former Mesiäinen house from Marjotaipale village, and its oldest part, the pirtti (cottage), is over 200 years old. The area has two granaries, one of which is possibly from 1711, and the gable of the other bears the date 1816. There is also a threshing barn, stables and a smoke sauna, which was built in 1974 as the museum's sauna. The windmill comes from Säteri farm and was built in 1842.

The objects include both eastern and western Finnish types of object from various parts of the parish. Events are held on the museum grounds every year, and the covered slope stage hosts summer theatre and part of the programme of the Joutsa Joutopäivät festival. The museum is maintained by the Joutsan Kotiseutuyhdistys ry (Joutsa Local Heritage Association).
