About the museum

The Jämijärvi Local Heritage Museum is located in a culturally valuable church setting near Jämijärvi church. The museum is owned by the municipality and run by the Jämijärvi-Seura ry (Jämijärvi Society). It presents local life from the 16th century onwards.

The museum operates in two historic granaries. The loan granary was built in 1856 in neoclassical style: it is a red, gable-roofed building with white corner boards, standing among large old spruces. Surplus grain was stored in the granary for bad years, and the interest on loaned grain financed community needs such as schools and poor relief. The grain cupboards have double walls and are separate from the outer wall, and the original heavy doors and locks have survived. The second building is a former parsonage granary, which has been taken into museum use.

On the lower floor there is a room furnished in the style of the late 19th century, with household goods, and an exhibition on the kiertokoulu (travelling school) and local associations. On the upper floor there are tools used in the manufacture of wooden drainage pipes: Jämijärvi was a pioneer in this field from the 1890s. Old tools, furniture, school supplies and many photographs of Jämijärvi are also on display.
