About the museum
The Joroinen Museum of National Defence (Joroisten maanpuolustusmuseo) began operations in 1988. Initially it operated in Hotel Joronjälki, and at the beginning of the 2000s it moved to the former school building in Huutokoski, where school activities had ended a couple of years earlier. The museum is private.
In total there are thousands of objects, documents and photographs related to national defence, dating from the late 17th century onwards. The collection began to be built up in the 1880s and has been gathered for about 120 years. On display are, among other things, uniforms, such as those of a jääkäri (Jäger) ensign, a member of the Civil Guard (suojeluskunta), Red Army soldiers, a soldier of the Estonian War of Independence and members of the Lotta Svärd organisation, as well as a cannon.
The museum also holds objects related to the history of Huutokoski and Joroinen, such as a piece of original railway rails completed in 1914, an ore-hoisting bucket from the ironworks era and photographs of anti-aircraft exercises at Joroinen airfield.
