About the museum
The history of the Karhulahti farm reaches back to the 16th century, and its owners changed over the centuries. The judge of the manorial court (herrastuomari) Johan Aleksander Oxman bought the farm in 1831. The family name later changed to Osmala, and Karhulahti remained in the family’s possession until the late 1970s. Since then the farm has been owned by the municipality of Joroinen, which restored it for museum use.
The local heritage museum is furnished in the style of the 1920s. Because the farm was still lived in during the 1970s, modern surface materials had to be removed, and original layers of paint and wallpaper have been uncovered. The furniture has been painted in its original colours, and many objects belonged to the house. The living room has remained almost unchanged: it has a stone stove from the 1920s, a loom and a planing bench, and the oldest object is a 17th-century chest.
The oldest parts of the main building are from the 19th century, and the central section was raised in the 1920s. The spacious yard has several buildings in their original positions: a three-part granary row, a cowshed, a stable, a smoke sauna, a smithy, a threshing barn and three hay barns. The farm lies about four kilometres from the centre of Joroinen.
