About the museum
The Virtasalmen kotiseutumuseo operates in the centre of Virtasalmi, opposite the church, in a red-ochre building completed in 1913. From the same year the building also housed local banks. When the church was not yet heated, services were held in the building during harsh winters until 1926, and pupils coming from afar were accommodated there.
The museum was founded in 1956 by the Virtasalmen kotiseutuyhdistys (Virtasalmi Local Heritage Association). The first exhibition spaces were in a barn in the yard of the Maamiesseura (farmers’ association). Later the museum passed into municipal ownership, and since 1983 it has operated in the former town hall. Today the museum is owned by the City of Pieksämäki, and it is kept open by Virtasalmen käsityöläiset ry (Virtasalmi Craftspeople’s Association).
The exhibitions present the livelihoods of Virtasalmi and its municipal life. The school-themed exhibition is especially varied and vivid. In the museum yard there is a heritage park with scale models of five groups of buildings from Virtasalmi, some of which were wholly or partly destroyed, as well as traditional garden plants.
