About the museum
The Valkeamäki Rural Museum in Virtasalmi was opened in 1998 next to the former Valkeamäki elementary school. The museum is owned and run by the Valkeamäen maa- ja kotitalousseura (Valkeamäki Agricultural and Home Economics Society). The exhibition building dates from the 1990s.
In the courtyard, in addition to the exhibition building, there is a log threshing barn, a barn, a smoke sauna built in 2006, a potato cellar built in 2007 and a 227-square-metre storage building completed in 2009, which houses machines and devices from the 1930s to the present day.
The bulk of the objects date from the early 20th century and were collected mainly from farms in Valkeamäki. The exhibitions depict the self-sufficient farming and forestry that most Finns practised at the end of the 19th century. On the ground floor there are large tools such as a horse-drawn seed drill, a mowing machine, a rake and a potato digger, as well as vehicles and forestry tools. Upstairs there are men's and women's handicrafts and household goods. The threshing barn contains grain processing tools, and the barn holds soil cultivation tools. The society also holds work demonstrations at the museum.
