About the museum
The Taipale museum canal was completed in 1840 and is considered Finland’s first lock canal built by the state. It belongs to the North Savo waterway in the Vuoksi water system. Next to the old canal is the still-operating Taipale canal, built as a deep-water fairway, and above the canal is the Taipale guest harbour.
The canal museum’s permanent exhibition, Via Canalia, tells of the history of canal building and of the water transport that followed in North Savo. Visitors can also explore the Taipale canal area, the museum canal and the operating deep-water fairway; information boards along the Kanavapolku (Canal Trail) tell of the history of the canal. In summer there is a café in the area, which is run by Kukka-Keidas in the summers of 2026–2028.
