About the museum
Juhola was the childhood and youth home of writer Marko Tapio (Marko Tapper), writer Harri Tapper, sculptor Kain Tapper and stage designer Yrjö Tapper. The brothers’ grandfather’s father, Juho Mikonpoika, settled in the Ryöppälä croft (torppa) in 1861. The farm was later divided, and the part the brothers’ grandfather received came to be known as Juhola. The brothers’ parents, Aino and Vihtori, lived on the farm until their deaths.
The present main building was completed in 1949. Upstairs are Marko Tapio’s writing nook and the brothers’ rooms with their original furniture, some of which was made by Kain Tapper. The property, owned by the city, is a site of national significance for visual art and literature.
The brick cowshed, completed in 1938, was converted into exhibition spaces in 1999 based on Kain Tapper’s ideas. Galleria Jarska takes its name from the nickname of the brothers’ mother, Aino Tapper. A walking route marked with information boards leads from the yard to the places where the brothers spent their youth.
