About the museum
The Säätyläiskotimuseo operates in the former main building of the Kolkanlahti farm, which dates from the 1780s. The estate was owned by gentry from its founding until the late 1800s.
Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804–1877) worked as a private tutor in 1823–1825 in the family of the estate’s then owner, Captain Erik Gustaf af Enehjelm. The museum was founded to tell of Runeberg’s years in Saarijärvi. The upper floor has a room where Runeberg lived during his years as a tutor.
The lower floor is furnished to depict the life of the host family. The furnishing is more modest than in gentry homes in the rintamaat (mainland provinces), but with its Gustavian and Biedermeier furniture it is still typical of gentry families.
