About the museum
The Saarijärven museo is the town’s art and cultural history museum, which serves as an information bank for its region: it records and researches the area’s cultural heritage and produces new knowledge about it. The main building is located along Herajärventie, and its yard has a sculpture park, a heritage herb garden, a meadow restored from the shore, and the Toivi Järvinen art home.
The permanent exhibition in the main building, Luovuutta luonnostaan (Creativity by Nature), presents works by artists from Saarijärvi and artists born there from about a hundred years. The works come from the town’s collections and from the collections of the Beda, Katri and Aune Herala Foundation and the Saarijärvi Mannila Art Foundation. The exhibition is divided into three parts: figure and self-portraits, landscapes and contemporary art.
The museum is also responsible for the town’s other museum sites: Kivikauden kylä (Stone Age Village), Tapperien Juhola and Galleria Jarska, and the Säätyläiskotimuseo (Gentry Home Museum). The museum’s collections also include archaeological and cultural-historical material.
