About the museum
Kivikauden kylä (Stone Age Village) is located on the shore of Lake Summanen, a meteorite impact crater lake, in Tarvaala, Saarijärvi. It is Finland's first and largest prehistoric site. Summassaari has numerous Stone Age settlement sites.
The village vividly presents Stone Age life, dwellings and a range of tools. On the shore and inside the buildings are game animals and fish, bone implements, clay vessels, bows, arrows, spears, fishing nets, traps and stone axes, and the village's inhabitants seem to have just stepped away for a moment.
The area also has the Lasten kivikauden kylä (Children's Stone Age Village), the Muinaispolku (Ancient Trail) and the Luontopolku (Nature Trail) with information and task boards. The village is a summer exhibition site of the Saarijärvi museum.
