About the museum
The Jyrkkäkoski iron works operated in Sonkajärvi from 1831 to 1909 and again from 1915 to 1919. The raw material was lake ore dredged from the lake bottoms. The works were founded by Zachris Franzén from Raahe, and the blast furnace began iron production in December 1835. The works later passed to the Vyborg commercial counsellor Paul Wahl, and in 1874 a new Scottish-type blast furnace was built for it.
The buildings that have survived include the newer blast furnace, the manager's residence Herrala built in the 1830s, a workers' residence, an outbuilding and a sauna. The mill built next to the new blast furnace in 1938 now serves as a café. The National Board of Antiquities has designated the Savo lake ore ironworks, of which Jyrkkäkoski is one, as a nationally significant built cultural environment.
The Ruukin Tupa premises house a museum where visitors can learn about the history of the ironworks. There is also a changing art exhibition every summer. Guided ironworks tours are held in the area.
