About the museum
The International Bottle Museum (Kansainvälinen Pullomuseo) opened in Sonkajärvi in 1986. The initiative came from Osmo Hänninen, professor of physiology at the University of Kuopio, who had begun collecting bottles as early as the 1970s. The museum building is a former community hall (seurantalo), which was renovated in the 1980s.
The collection comprises about 6,500 bottles from different parts of the world, which are catalogued in an index. Among them are old Finnish snuff bottles as well as Chinese acupuncture, perfume and mosquito-repellent bottles. Special items include a Roman-era tear bottle about 1,600 years old and a Syrian oil bottle from the same period. The oldest Finnish bottles date from the early 19th century.
The collection is so large that the bottles on display change from time to time. Upstairs there is a collection of Coca-Cola bottles and the exhibition “Grandma’s Juice Cellar” (mummon mehukellari). In illuminated display cases the surfaces, colours and shapes of the glass show well.
