About the museum
The Vieremän kotiseutumuseo is located in the Culture Hill area, where several buildings moved from various places form an outdoor museum area and a horse-vehicle museum. The museum presents the history of forestry work up to the present day.
The main exhibit of the museum area is the Rahkamäki camp, a former forest camp. The permanent exhibition in the camp was designed and carried out in 2011–2013 and tells of the lives of forest workers through exhibition texts and objects. The largest room of the camp, the tylsäpää (blunt end), was the men's sleeping quarters; in the middle was the kitchen, where two cooks worked, and the foreman had his own space, the teräväpää (sharp end). The Rahkamäki camp was in use until the 1960s. An earlier camp period is shown by the single-room Talashovi camp, which was used until the 1920s.
In the yard there are also an old threshing barn, the old main building of the farm, a stable building, a lampola, a storage building, two storehouses and a smoke sauna. In 2003–2004 permanent exhibitions were set up in the chamber of the living building, in the stable and in the smoke sauna. Horse-drawn vehicles are displayed in the threshing barn and the lampola, and objects related to horses in the stable.
