About the museum
The K. H. Renlund Museum is named after Karl Herman Renlund (1850–1908), born in Kokkola, who bequeathed an art collection and other objects to his home town. The core of the collection is Finnish Golden Age art, such as works by Pekka Halonen, Albert Edelfelt and Magnus Enckell. The museum also serves as the Central Ostrobothnia provincial museum.
The museum quarter is in the old grid-plan area of Kokkola. Pedagogio was built as a school building in 1696 and is probably the oldest secular wooden building in an urban setting in Finland; the museum has used it since 1909. Roos House was built in 1813 by the merchant Anders Roos, and its upper floor held a ballroom where Emperor Alexander I was greeted in 1819. Lassander House is furnished as the home of an 18th-century merchant family.
The museum's collections include about 30,000 objects, 5,500 works of art and 350,000 photographs. The museum quarter is on Pitkänsillankatu, and other sites of the museum include the home of Fredrik and Anna Draken, Hakalax's Tolvmansgården, an English landing boat, the Tankari seal-hunting museum and the Lohtaja local heritage museum.
