About the museum
Kieppi is Kokkola's natural history museum, located in the museum block in the city centre. The museum is based on the extensive natural history collection created as the life's work of Veikko Salkio (1912–2006). Salkio's aim was to promote nature conservation and environmental education, and Kieppi continues this work by presenting hundreds of specimens. Salkio wanted to donate his collection to everyone interested in nature and animals, and hoped that it would still be on display in the year 4999.
Taxidermy was Salkio's lifelong hobby. Already in the late 1930s he had assembled a considerable collection of northern animals in Petsamo, but had to leave it behind because of the Winter War. In 1976 Salkio sold a second collection to the city of Rovaniemi, but the cooperation ended in disagreement, and part of that collection is still on display at the Lapin maakuntamuseo (Lapland Provincial Museum). When Salkio moved to Kokkola in 1980, he donated his collection to the city of Kokkola, which allowed the collection to be expanded for the rest of his life.
In 2012 the collection was renamed to its present form, Kieppi, Kokkolan luonnontieteellinen museo. Besides the animal collection, the museum has a mineral and butterfly collection.
