About the museum
The Kaarlela local heritage museum is located on Kirkonmäki in Kokkola, near the medieval stone church of Kaarlela. The museum presents local peasant culture from the 19th century. In the museum yard time seems to have stood still: the stables, smoke sauna, threshing barn and outbuildings bear witness to the peasant culture of their time. The museum area also has a small cottage, a tanner’s workshop, a carding works and an impressive windmill.
The museum’s exhibition rooms are in the stone building that belongs to the neighbouring Kaarlela parsonage. The building was commissioned in 1775 by the economist, member of the Diet and vicar Anders Chydenius. The actual parsonage was built in 1737 during the time of vicar Karl Gustav Werrander, and it is the only surviving parsonage in Swedish Baroque style in Finland.
Nearby is the medieval stone church of Kaarlela, whose oldest parts date from the 1460s. At the initiative of Anders Chydenius, the church was extended and made into a cross-plan church at the end of the 18th century. In July the Kaarlela church is open to visitors as a roadside church.
