About the museum
The Miila Craft Museum presents everyday craft culture in a functionalist building in the centre of Paimio. Collection work began in 2010, following a bequest from Lyyli Tuomola of Halikko. In the same year the city of Paimio established the Lyyli Tuomola Foundation to manage the donation; the terms of the will included founding a craft museum and showcasing the crafts of the Tuomola family. The museum is still run by the Lyyli Tuomola Foundation.
The museum's two basic exhibitions tell of the history and significance of craft traditions in people's everyday lives. The exhibition Arkista aherrusta (Everyday Toil) addresses the changing meaning of handicrafts in the 20th century and includes, among other things, handiwork made at the front (puhdetyöt) and tools for producing cloth and wool; visitors can try a vinorukki (traditional tool) and an old sewing machine themselves. The exhibition Käsityön juhlaa (Celebrating Craft) presents crafts associated with celebrations of life stages, such as a wedding dress from 1914, national costumes and the Paimio costume.
In addition to the basic exhibitions, the museum has a theme exhibition that changes every year. The most important part of the museum's collection is the craft collection of the Tuomola family, which focuses on the first half of the 20th century.
