About the museum
Trömperi coaching inn is a double-room house in 19th-century style in Pitkäportaa, Halikko, beside the old King’s Road (Kuninkaantie) between Turku and Helsinki. The building is protected under the Built Heritage Act. It was originally a crofter’s cottage of the vicarage, and its oldest part, the living room (tupa), probably dates from the early 18th century. The coaching inn was founded by Fredrik Strömberg, who moved to the croft through marriage and ran a busy inn on the road between Turku and Vyborg.
According to tradition, counts and royalty stopped at the coaching inn on their hunting and crayfish trips, and villagers gathered there to celebrate. A bakehouse room (pakaritupa), where beer was brewed and bread baked, was later added to the living room, and the hall, which now houses the café, was built last. The furniture in the residential building is original. The last resident of the house, Suoma Saarinen, donated it to the municipality of Halikko, which renovated the living room and the hallway in 1970.
Today the coaching inn is a museum site of the Salo Historical Museum (SAMU). A summer café operates in the hall, and several events are held at the coaching inn in summer.
