About the museum
Kallenautio operated as a coaching inn in 1778–1881 and 1920–1928. It became one of the country’s best-known coaching inns thanks to the writer Zacharias Topelius. He described Kallenautio and its surroundings in several of his works, and stopped at the farm while travelling between his place of study in Helsinki and his home in Uusikaarlepyy. Topelius also wrote a short story describing the area, Toholampi.
The inn buildings have belonged to the Kallenautio family since the 18th century and stand on their original site. They were donated to Juupajoki-Seura in 1955, and the association runs the museum there with volunteer effort, cherishing the coaching-inn tradition. The buildings are old Häme peasant buildings, some more than 300 years old, and together they form an enclosed yard.
The museum area has a pirtti café (pirttikahvila), the Hollituvan craft shop and an art exhibition space, as well as the Laurientupa, which hosts changing art exhibitions in summer. The area also has a children’s play barn (leikkiaitta) run by MLL Juupajoki (Mannerheim League for Child Welfare) and a small domestic animal yard.
