About the museum
From the 1910s the stone cowshed of the parsonage was partly used by the parish priest and partly by the municipal loan-grain store. The Vilppula-Seura, founded in 1963, began restoring the stone cowshed, which had been used for storage and business, into local heritage museum premises in 1981, and the museum opened to the public in 1983. The yard of the museum includes a wind motor obtained from the Ala-Pynnönen farmhouse, and a milk stand shared by the Vilppula farmers' school and the Metsämäki farm. The old Akula granary moved behind the stone cowshed museum serves as the summer exhibition space.
The Mänttä-Vilppula school museum was founded in 1988, when the municipality's oldest school, the Kolho school, and the municipal school system turned 100 years old. Museum activity began at the Kolho school, where a collection consisting mainly of objects from the old Kolho school and the closed Vilppula schools had been gathered.
The museums display local objects related to rural life, objects connected with the State Railways, fire pumps and objects from the era of the public elementary schools (kansakoulu). The school museum and the local heritage museum are run by Vilppula-Seura.
