About the museum
The Ruovesi local heritage museum was founded in 1932 by the Ruoveden Kotiseutu- ja Museoyhdistys ry (Ruovesi Local Heritage and Museum Association). Collecting of objects began already in the 1920s under the municipal doctor Einar Palmén, who later became a medical councillor (lääkintöneuvos). The museum passed into municipal ownership in 1989, and its present maintainer is the Municipality of Ruovesi.
The museum is a house museum that presents a medium-sized North Häme self-sufficient farm and its everyday life at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The house has the atmosphere of a living dwelling. The buildings are grouped around two yards, the men’s yard (miespiha) and the threshing-barn yard (riihipiha). The collection contains over a thousand objects related to handicrafts.
