About the museum
The Paltanmäki local heritage museum was founded in the 1930s and is located on Paltanvuori in central Orivesi. The Oriveden Kotiseutuyhdistys, which is responsible for the museum, received the Hämeen Heimoliitto’s Häme-teko 2010 award for the museum’s exemplary care and the events held there.
The open-air museum area contains 14 old log buildings moved from different parts of Orivesi: dwellings, storehouses, a windmill and a stable. The buildings are examples of the building styles of their time and of traditional building skill, and the oldest of them is over 300 years old.
The dwellings are richly furnished with objects, furniture and textiles from the period. Outbuildings house objects related to dairy farming, field work, the blacksmith’s trade, woodworking and animal husbandry. The museum presents life in the parish of Orivesi from the 1800s to the mid-1900s. Next to the area are the Veteraanien perinnemuseo (Veterans’ Heritage Museum) and the Paltanmäen elämysportaat (Paltanmäki adventure stairs).
