About the museum
The Kiuruvesi farmers’ association (maamiesseura) planned to found a museum as early as 1935, but the war delayed the project. In 1944 it was decided to move a smoke cabin (savupirtti) built in 1860 and bought from Tuikka in Sulkava to the church village. The local heritage association was founded in 1947, and the farmers’ association donated the collection it had gathered to it. The actual museum was then established on the Männistönmäki rock, where, in addition to the smoke cabin, a windmill and luhti and kokko storehouses were moved.
In 1973 the museum and a large part of its collection were destroyed in a fire, after which the museum was taken over by the municipality. The present museum area was built on land received from the parish, and its design was by Mirja Nuutinen from Kiuruvesi.
The museum area consists of an object museum and a Savo-style courtyard. The owner of the farm of the object museum building, Antti Hyvärinen, built it in 1860 as a loan granary for the municipality of Kiuruvesi. The main building of the courtyard is the Hyvärilä farmhouse from Luupuvesi, dating from 1916, whose rooms are furnished to show farmhouse interiors from different decades.
