About the museum

Klemetsgårdarna in Maxmo is a farm complex built up in the mid-1700s. Right up to the 1970s there were three separate farms at Klemetsbacken. After the Great Wrath (stora ofreden), the Klemets homestead stood empty, and Johan Ehrsson from Bjurs parish in Västerbotten bought it up. He and his sons built three main farmsteads in the Västerbotten style, with taller and narrower cottages than those in Ostrobothnia. The oldest cottage dates from the 1730s.

Today the area is a local heritage museum run by the Maxmo Local Heritage Association (founded 1989) and the Strömmers stiftelse (Strömmer Foundation). The exhibitions include a rich textile collection with hats, clothing, bed linen and wall hangings from the first half of the 1900s, an organ museum, a radio and telephone exhibition, a motorcycle exhibition, photo exhibitions and everyday objects from peasant life. In the café visitors find an interior with functionalist furniture from the 1940s.

A short distance along Kärklaxvägen is the Söndagsskolmuseet (Sunday School Museum), where Svanhild Petrolaj ran a Sunday school for the village's children in the early 1900s. The association also runs a fishing museum and the activities at Tottesund manor.
