About the museum
The Vähänkyrön kotiseutumuseo operates in an old loan granary beside the Kyrönjoki river, near the church. The granary is in its original location, and in the yard there is a stone on which the shame pole once stood. The exhibition tells of life in former times and is divided into themes such as childbirth, spiritual life, farming and the wartime.
The collection includes fishing equipment, sledges, farm implements and tinsmith's tools. A special part is what is probably Finland's oldest midwife's equipment, and an exhibition on childbirth, which includes a nanny's uniform from the 1950s, rattles, children's books and cradles. For a long time, washcloths for maternity packs were made in Vähäkyrö. The collections also include a tailor's tools, looms and spinning wheels, among them Finland's oldest spinning wheel, dating from 1611, and the vellikello (porridge bell) of the Kolkki manor.
One room has been built to imitate a Second World War dugout. Rarities include a German Jäger uniform from the Civil War, Russian field trousers and helmet, and Finland's first state flag. Flags of the civil guard and of front-line veterans are also on display.
