About the museum
Hägglunds fotomuseum opened in July 2000 on the second floor of Kvarnstugan in the mill area of Rökiö in Vörå. The museum is based on the studio of the photographer Erik Hägglund (1884–1962) and shows cameras, studio equipment and photographs that tell the history of photography from 1910 to the present day.
As a young man, Erik Hägglund travelled to Sweden and worked as an apprentice painter. He became interested in photography in a photo studio there, and after returning home he started his own studio in 1910. For half a century he documented life in Vörå and the surrounding area, and he was one of those who brought the art of photography to the Ostrobothnian countryside. His glass negatives, several tens of thousands in number, are today kept in the Ostrobothnian Tradition Archive.
The museum contains a reconstruction of the studio with the first studio camera and the backdrop that Hägglund himself built and painted, around a hundred cameras, a small darkroom, and a demonstration of how photographs were retouched with pencil and strong lamps. Some of Hägglund's paintings are also on display, and art exhibitions are held in the area in summer. The mill on the site was built in 1920 and has been developed by the Rökiö library association into a centre for local activities and tourism.
