Kökars Museum

About the museum

Kökars Museum is housed in the former Österbygge-Hellsö school from 1913 and was opened by the Kökar Local Heritage Association in 1988. The museum shows how the people of Kökar lived in the past.

The permanent exhibition "Ett annat Kökar" (Another Kökar) depicts life on Kökar from the 1800s to the 1940s through a large collection of photographs and films. The main building also houses the old church organ from 1911, photographs, old furniture and textiles.

The museum grounds have preserved old buildings, but also newly built houses in the old style. There is a boat exhibition with old boats and working engines, a stock cabin (stockstuga), a furnished crofter's cottage (torpstuga) and a barn with farm tools, as well as a ceramics workshop and a log-built smithy. The school's old outhouse, with ventilation and six seats, is still there, and down by the shore are a boathouse, a newly built fishing house and a stone quay with a brokista.
