About the museum
Utö hembygdsmuseum (Utö Local Heritage Museum) is located on Utö in Pargas, in the Åboland archipelago, and is maintained by the Utö hembygdsförening (Utö Local Heritage Association). The museum is housed in Stenhuset, which was built in 1753 in connection with the construction of the first lighthouse and is Utö’s oldest building. Stenhuset served as the official residence of the lighthouse keepers until the 1860s, when the fireplaces were demolished, and afterwards as a storehouse, a workshop and a woodshed.
In the 1990s the Sjöfartsverket (Finnish Maritime Administration) had the building thoroughly renovated and rented it to the Utö hembygdsförening, which opened a local heritage museum in the house on 27 July 1991. The museum is located on the lighthouse hill, on the left side of the road when going down towards the east.
The exhibition focuses on Utö’s special position as a community of officials in the outer archipelago, and describes the history of the pilots, the lighthouse keepers and the military, as well as life in the local community, fishing and hunting. Four exhibition rooms present seafaring, fishing and hunting, pilot and lighthouse work, and village life. Visitors can see photographs from different seasons, listen to stories from old times and become acquainted with the many shipwrecks in the Utö waters.
