About the museum
Kotimuseo Metsärinne is located in the old cultural landscape of Anian village in Pirkkala. The museum is the red log building Nygård, popularly called Nyykooli. The building probably dates from the early 1800s, and according to the parish registers, from 1848 it was home to the widow of Erik Ulrik Spoof, a cavalryman who had served in the Finnish War, together with her daughter. Later the house was owned by the crofter Juho Davidson and his wife, and in 1938 it was bought at auction by Elsa Niemi.
The house decayed over the years, but Niemi's daughter Sinikka and her husband Pekka Vihmari restored it. The building is now furnished with respect for former times: at one end there is a hall and a small chamber, and at the other a bake room (leivintupa). On display are, among other things, tools of master shoemaker Juho Helenius, memories of market trading and hairdressing machines.
Elsa Niemi began making black pudding in the 1920s, and the sausages were sold at the Tampere market hall until 1989. The restored black pudding workshop now operates as a black pudding museum (mustamakkaramuseo).
