About the museum
The opening of the Kuorevesi local heritage museum was celebrated on 18 August 1963 in Joensuu village, on the shore of Lake Kuorevesi. Already by then several buildings of Häme peasant farms had been moved to the site: the first, in 1956, was the main building from Virkajärvi farm, followed by a smoke cabin from Juhala in Särkilahti village, as well as a clothes granary and a grain granary. Later the site acquired, among other things, a smithy, a fish storehouse, a row of granaries, an agricultural shelter and a drying barn (riihi) bought in 1982.
The museum's collections focus on the traditional peasant culture of the 1800s and early 1900s. More than 3,300 objects have been catalogued, and each has a donor. The oldest object is a silver coin from 1668. The upper floor of the main building holds extensive collections, including objects from the war and the years of shortage, and Kreeta's room (Kreetan kamari). The chamber of the smoke cabin hosts a changing exhibition every summer.
The museum's collections also include the eleven-oared church boat Liukas, donated to the museum by Ruth Serlachius in 1956, which is on display in the boathouse of the Kuorevesi church yard. The museum is maintained by Kuorevesi-Seura.
