About the museum
The Aarresaari Local Heritage Museum (Aarresaaren kotiseutumuseo) is an open-air museum area on the shore of Lake Kankarisvesi in Jämsänkoski. The museum is run by the Jämsänkosken Kotiseutuyhdistys (Jämsänkoski Local Heritage Association), founded in 1949, and it opened to the public in 1952. The museum area took shape in the 1950s–1970s, when buildings from around Jämsänkoski were moved there.
The buildings tell of the history of the area from the 16th century to the early decades of the 20th century. The oldest include hunting granaries and a water mill. Still in the early 19th century Jämsänkoski lived from farming, cattle keeping and hunting, and a large number of related objects are on display in the museum. In the late 19th century, paper mills changed the life of the area. The factory workers' cottages have been furnished to depict the living conditions of that time.
Every year the museum area hosts events such as a family midsummer festival and Aarresaari's Old-Time Christmas (Wanhan ajan joulu). The museum can also be reached by boat or canoe.
