About the museum
The Kuru open-air museum is located in Kuru, in the Ylöjärvi city area, at Poikeluksentie 60. The museum area has six buildings completed in the 18th and 19th centuries. The best known of them is Vänrikki Stool’s tupa: the national poet J. L. Runeberg took his themes for the stories of Ensign Stool from the accounts of Ensign Polviander.
The area also has a 19th-century treadle mill (jalkamylly), a smoke sauna and a riima storehouse (riima-aitta), one of the oldest wooden buildings in Pirkanmaa. In summer the Keihäslahti exhibition house and the Kuru school museum are open at the same time as the open-air museum. Events are held in the museum area in summer, including the Kuru Week children’s party.
