About the museum
Kycklings has been a farmhouse since the 1500s. The main building was moved to its present site in the mid-1800s from the Mattas farmyard. It originally consisted of a large tupa (main room) and a hall, with an open porstua (entrance hall) between them and a small chamber. Later one more bedroom and a veranda were added. The house takes its name from Erik Bertelsson Kycklings, who took possession of it in the 1660s.
In the late 1800s Kycklings was owned by the Wallgren family, to which belonged the grandfather of the sculptor Ville Wallgren, G. G. Wallgren. Cantor August Karlsson became a son-in-law of the house, and the house was inherited by his daughter Sara. During the war, several families who had moved from Karelia were housed in the house. Sara Hasting hoped that the home would become a local heritage house, and she was involved in founding the Lappträsk Hembygdsförening (Lapinjärvi local heritage association) in 1929.
The association has looked after Kycklings since 1978 and has opened it as a local heritage house. When the association also acquired the Kycklings plot at the end of the 1990s, a torppa (crofter's cottage) and a smoke sauna were moved into the yard. The house displays, among other things, the workshop of a siselöijä (traditional craftsman) and a shoemaker's workroom.
