About the museum
The collections of the Liljendals hembygdsmuseum began to be built up in 1964, when students from Nylands Nation carried out a local heritage survey together with the local heritage board. The Liljendal local heritage association was founded in 1984 to take care of the collections, and since the mid-1980s the association has looked after them. In the first years exhibitions were held in the Bagarstuga storehouses. In 1990 the association bought a grain storehouse next to the churchyard, and the following year the municipality transferred its museum collections to the association.
The grain storehouse is mainly the museum’s store. On the ground floor there are carts and large farm objects, and household objects and other small items are shown on the upper floor. The storehouse also contains a carriage modelled on English hunting carriages and a hearse from the 1930s; the carriages can be hired for events such as weddings and funerals.
Before the municipal merger with Loviisa, the association bought the former Söderby school property, which was named Sockengården and became the association’s home. In the craft cabin on the farm are the wartime collections of the Liljendal Veterans, and next to Sockengården a memorial exhibition of the veterans is held, as well as a shoemaker’s exhibition.
