About the museum
The objects and buildings of the Laihia local heritage museum present a typical Ostrobothnian 19th-century farmhouse. The museum is housed in the Rapila house, built in 1827, which still stands in its original location. The museum moved into the house in the 1970s. The house was once prosperous, and its walls were decorated with flower paintings.
The museum area has 16 buildings, the oldest of which is a grain granary from 1731, and more than 5,000 objects. One of the oldest objects is a bridal chair with the year 1638 carved into its backrest. Burial mounds have been found in Laihia, and Iron Age finds, for example, are on display in the museum. The attic holds tools and textiles, including wartime clothing. In the master's chamber, memorabilia of the Laihia harness-racing king Eri-Aaron and of harness-racing culture are presented. The museum also has the bicycle of the laukkuryssä (travelling Russian peddler) Aleksei Mitrofanoff from the early 1900s.
The Nuukuuri Museum is one of Finland's most unusual museums. Its collections contain many used objects, and the museum presents the famous thriftiness of the people of Laihia with humour. The museum has a summer café, a souvenir sales point and an extensive Arabia coffee-cup exhibition. Fiddler evenings are also held in summer.
