About the museum

Suomen nuorisoseuramuseo opened in Laihia in 2000, in connection with the Laihia youth association hall. Its task is to preserve the spiritual and material heritage of the youth association movement.

The permanent exhibition tells the history of the movement from the 1800s to the present day, by theme – for example through temperance work, theatre, folk dance, sport and music festivals. The first youth association was founded in 1881 on the initiative of Matti Sippola from Kauhava and Santeri Alkio from Laihia; Alkio was the movement’s ideological leader. The exhibits include objects, photographs and posters, theatre props, costumes and parts of a cinema auditorium, as well as South Ostrobothnian national costumes. Among the museum’s treasures is a sofa group in the Jugend style designed by architect Yrjö Blomstedt. The large exhibition hall displays sports medals, bicycles and a piano.
