About the museum
The Leppävirta local heritage museum is located in the centre of Leppävirta, right beside the church. It operates in the parish’s former two-storey grain storehouse from 1848, which was converted for museum use in the late 1950s. The museum opened to the public in 1962.
The museum presents the history of the area broadly, from the Stone Age to recent decades. The collection comprises about 3,000 objects and about 7,000 photographs, which tell of the parish’s history, livelihoods and culture. The museum’s collections can also be explored online.
The museum is open to the public mainly in summer, and in the winter season groups can visit by arrangement. A guide for teachers has been prepared for the exhibitions of the local heritage museum.
