About the museum
The Kuhmalahti local heritage museum was founded in 1973 and is maintained by the Kuhmalahti Local Heritage Association. The museum is located in the church village of Kuhmalahti, now in the city of Kangasala. In the museum yard there is a granary built in 1906, moved to its present site in 1980–1981, as well as a two-storey bake house (leivintupa, also called pakari) completed in 1933, and four granaries (aitta).
The museum's permanent exhibition has been renewed under the title "Käsin tehty Kuhmalahti – Arjen taitoja ja tarinoita 1800–1900-luvun taitteesta" (Handmade Kuhmalahti – Everyday Skills and Stories from the Turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries). The exhibition emphasises the handicraft tradition and self-sufficiency as part of life in Kuhmalahti. The museum rooms include a school classroom, a children's play corner, a bake-house room and a presentation of the wartime evacuation of the Lintula Orthodox monastery to Kuhmalahti.
The exhibition includes a large number of objects made by hand in Kuhmalahti, such as musical instruments, household tools, rocking horses, tools and fabrics. The exhibition is supplemented by an audio guide that works with QR codes.
