About the museum

Lyytikkälä farm is located in Lyytikkälä village in Suomenniemi, along main road 13, and is one of the best-preserved peasant farm complexes in South Karelia. Suomenniemi merged with the city of Mikkeli at the beginning of 2013. In the 1700s Lyytikkälä served as an auxiliary farm of a rusthalli (a cavalry farm). It was redeemed as an independent hereditary farm in 1859 and remained in the same family's possession for a good two and a half centuries.

In addition to the residential manor, the yard contains about twenty outbuildings. The residential manor, completed in 1867, was built by Vilppu Lyytikäinen, and its largest room is the tupa (main room). The granaries represent different building periods, from the 1700s to the late 1800s, and the yard includes, among others, flour, salt and game granaries as well as a two-storey sleeping granary (nukkuma-aitta). The older of the stables dates from 1827, and the block-stone cowshed from 1877–1881.

The farmyard with its buildings and movable property was purchased by the National Board of Antiquities (Museovirasto) in 1984, and the house was opened to the public in 1989. The Lyytikkälä House Foundation is responsible for keeping the house open, for supervision and for insurance, in accordance with its agreement with the National Board of Antiquities. A summer café operates on the site during opening hours.
