About the museum
Pien-Toijola is a peasant farm in the village of Toijola in Someenjärvi, about 20 km from Ristiina centre in the direction of Puumala. The farm has been owned by the Toijonen family since 1672, and it is regarded as a peasant-culture environment of national significance.
The yard is an almost complete ensemble of a 19th-century farm. Around the enclosed square yard stand the main building, a stone cowshed and seven storehouses. The main building was built in 1803 and renovated in 1880. In total the farm has 28 buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, and they stand on their original sites. Additional storehouses stand in the field, and at the end of a cart track across the field are a smoke sauna and a maid’s storehouse (piian aitta).
The objects on display are the farm’s own household items. The farm has been awarded the plaque of honour of the Peasant Culture Foundation (Talonpoikaiskulttuurisäätiö), and parts of the films Tulitikkuja lainaamassa (1969), Talvisota (1988) and Tuntematon sotilas (2016) were filmed there. The museum work is supported by Ristiina-Seura ry.
