About the museum
The Hakamäki museum area was established in the Savitaipale church village in 1953, and its buildings are owned by the Savitaipaleen Kotiseutuyhdistys (Savitaipale Local Heritage Association). The area lies on a wooded hill with a view over Lake Kuolimo. The diverse forest of the hill is a nature conservation area.
The museum's main building is a cabin originally built in the 19th century as a smoke cabin, which was moved to Hakamäki in the early 1970s. The yard also contains a granary, a windmill, a smoke sauna, a threshing barn (riihi) and a barn (riihilato). The oldest building on the site is the ruotu soldier's croft from the 18th century, whose furnishings show the modest everyday life of a soldier's family in the Swedish period. The windmill is a so-called post mill, which could be turned to face the wind. The barns display tools and traditional handicrafts, and the threshing barn serves as an exhibition space where rye is threshed in the traditional way with flails.
At Hakamäki some objects can be touched, and at events visitors can try some tools. There are traditional toys for children, such as hobby horses and spinning tops. The hill also has an observation tower, 14 metres high, erected in 2008, and a performance stage where music and theatre performances are held in summer, along with the Hakamäki Piknik event.
