About the museum
The activity of the Mikkelin taidemuseo began in 1970, when the Johannes Haapasalon museo (Johannes Haapasalo Museum) opened in the granite building completed in 1912. The building was designed by architect Armas Ranta. In 1976 the museum received its present name, when it received the Martti Airio art collection as a donation. In 1981 the museum became the South Savo regional art museum.
The museum operated in the granite building until 2019. In June 2019 exhibition activities moved to temporary premises on the second floor of the Akseli shopping centre. In 2020 the museum became a regional responsibility museum under the new Museums Act, with responsibility for the art museum duties of South Savo.
The museum's focal points are exhibition activities, South Savo visual art, the care and growth of art collections, and Finnish illustration art. Several changing exhibitions are held each year, and the museum offers workshops and art education projects. Well-known events of the museum are the Kuvitustriennaali (Illustration Triennial) and M_itä? (Nykytaiteen biennaali, Contemporary Art Biennial).
